Packaging Design
Packaging design is the connection of form, structure, materials, colour, imagery, typography, and regulatory information with ancillary design elements to make a product suitable for marketing.” To put that into a simpler form: Your packaging is an element of your marketing strategy.
Project 1 - CRIMSON Tampon Packaging Design
The brief for this project was to come up with design surface graphics for three boxes each of which contains a different variety of one product. We had to exploit the potential of a carton board box for packaging and communication. We were allowed two spot colours only for each box. Neither of the two spot colours for any box need be black. A solution that creates variation in the surface graphics beyond a simple change of colour between each box is required. Accompanying the box is a folded sheet of paper. This sheet is also to be printed in two spot colours. The colours need not be those used for the box.
I decided to explore tampon packaging and came up with the name Crimson as the brand of tampons and Bold, Flow and Spot for the variations of the one product, which aligned with the heaviness of the flow. Crimson relates to the red colour of blood and the variety names have been tied with the different levels of flow you have on your period. Bold being the heaviest for the super tampon range, flow meaning steady or regular and being the everyday use tampons. Finally, spot relating to the lightest flow for the smaller tampons.
It took a while to come up with the final designs, a lot of trial and error was experienced as I wanted the designs to streamline each other but also to correspond with the variety names. This made it a bit of a difficult process and after some feedback I realised I needed to either stick with an illustrative style or graphic. This caused a few changes in the design of the cohesion between the packages.
After coming up with such strong branding names I thought the best way to come up with graphics for these packages would be to explore what these words would look like and what colours they would be represented in. These are the 3 variations that I came up with, the bold is very punchy and exciting using bright colours to express the boldness. The flow packaging is more harmonious creating a balance with different shapes that were used in the other two packages to tie them together and to represent the word flow. Finally, the spot design is more of a cute design using spots of the bolder colour.
Project 2 - BOLD Branding & Packaging Design
The aim of this task was to communicate the bold and vibrant nature of a coffee bean and how it makes people feel, the energy that it gives and the strong aroma that it has. I created marks using a sponge that turned out well and express the bold, complex nature of the coffee bean that I was hoping to illustrate. Some of the main principles outlined in my compositions are colour, shape, texture, contrast, and space. Contrast and space were the main principles that were used in the outcome as I wanted to create that bold message and they were the best two ways of doing that.
